Our First Egg!

Yes, it is such a big deal that it deserves its own post.
One of our pretty July babies laid her very first egg today, and we are just a little excited.  We have been anticipating this moment for months...and it was beautiful ♥

I'm not exactly sure who was more excited, me or the girls.  We were screaming and giving high fives and making sure the little egg didn't hit the ground in all of our excitement while the chickens eyed us like we were crazy.  The best reaction, though, was when the munchkin asked Annabelle the pig if she was the one who laid the egg ;)  I love that kid.

When we picked up our chicks last summer, I had no idea how much we would fall in love with them.  They are such a blast and have brought us so many fun moments and memories already!

Here's to many more eggs from our little Half-Acre Home on the Range with love.

Christmas Blessings

“Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”  ~ Luke 2:10-12

“For it is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child Himself.”  ~ Charles Dickens

Our unofficial Christmas card picture (because I never actually ordered them)
The baby sister and I decided that this one was our favorite...because, well, the munchkin is perfect {like always}  ;)

This was a close second...my sweet girls ♥

I am so thankful for the perfect gift of Christ today and every day and the blessings and moments that the Lord has showered upon us throughout another beautiful year.

We wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." ~ Isaiah 9:6

Backyard Farmyard in December

It's almost Christmas.  We've decked the halls, attended beautiful church services, enjoyed time with family, visited Santa (sort of ~ the munchkin would have no part of the strange jolly man), eaten lots of great food, and continued our daily jaunts across the backyard to our favorite little Half-Acre Home on the Range.  Annabelle is all settled into her brand new home built by the greatest guy in the world.  She quickly created her own little mud spa, and my jeans and boots are permanently orange.

Is that not the most adorable little piggy you have ever seen!?

I am really biased, but I think she is seriously the best.

I have found that the most opportune time to take (non-blurry) pictures of her is when she's eating.  So, it kinda seems like she eats...all the time.  Several folks have asked what she eats.  She eats a pelleted "mini-pig" food topped with a mix of her favorite treats which may include spinach, kale, carrots, grapes, apples, peanut butter treats...and the list goes on and on ;)

I love that there is still life in our little garden plot in the middle of December.  The girlies and I plopped a few garlic cloves into the ground in the fall, and these shoots are growing steadily.  They just make me happy.

We have had rain and ice and mud.  There have been days when it seemed we would never see the sun again...and then, it returned, if only briefly.  The clouds moved out for a short spell, and I was able to spend more time outside.

These pretty ladies are getting so big and fluffy.  Beautiful birds.

And they are just a little fascinated with their new neighbor.  They are all so curious about Miss Annabelle.  A few have flown over for a visit.

Speaking of fascination.  Check out the feathered one below.  My pretty little Easter Egger surprised me early one morning.  Stopped me in my tracks as I headed to the coop.  I have been suspicious for a little while now, but the morning I heard "her" sunrise greeting...I realized that "Layla" may not ever lay a green egg and would probably need a new name.  I was amazed as I listened to that awkward "cock-a-doodle-doo." This might sound silly, but my little mini-farm felt all grown up with that early morning crow!

Yep, I think it's safe to say that Layla is now a Milo.  My big girl renamed him.  I was leaning toward something like Maximus or Mr. Darcy, but the six year old won that battle.

They win a lot of battles, I'm not going to lie.

Sweet Annabelle.  Adorable Super Girl.  They are ready to save the world...or at least the big backyard ;)

While Christmas is my most favorite time of the year, I am quietly yearning for warmer, longer, dryer days to spend outside.  I love the glow of the Christmas tree, hot coffee, cozy blankets, and watching Christmas movies incessantly, but I also miss green trees, warm sunshine, and blooming things.  I received my first seed catalog for 2014 and had a mini-celebration.  For Christmas, I asked for grow lights to start seedlings indoors.  Seriously.  And I cannot wait to use them! :)

Hope you're keeping warm and dry and enjoying this wonderful time of year!
Have a blessed and beautiful day :)
